Designing Inclusive Spaces for the Visually Impaired
In Australia, it’s estimated that over 575,000 people live with vision impairment, with approximately 66,000 of these individuals being blind. Vision impairment can significantly affect daily activities, from navigating public spaces to accessing essential services. As Australia’s population ages, the number of people facing vision impairments is expected to increase, making it even more essential to create environments that are accessible to everyone.
For those with vision impairments, thoughtful design elements like tactile surfaces, contrasting colours, and sensory enhancements can improve the experience of navigating public spaces, interacting with the environment, and accessing important services with greater ease and independence.
1. Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSIs)
Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSIs) play a crucial role in helping individuals with vision impairments navigate spaces. These raised patterns on the floor provide non-visual information through touch, allowing users to detect changes in direction, potential hazards, or important decision points like crossings or entries.- Warning Tactiles are often used near hazardous areas such as stairs or platform edges. They help alert individuals to stop and proceed with caution.
- Directional Tactiles guide users along safe paths, indicating a continuous and straight route that leads to essential destinations like entrances, lifts or services.
2. High-Contrast Colour and Signage
Contrast and colour play a significant role in creating spaces that are easier to perceive, especially for individuals with low vision. High-contrast signage and features can greatly enhance visual accessibility by allowing important elements to stand out clearly.- Ensure signs and directional guides have a strong contrast between text and background for easier readability. For example, black text on a white background or white text on a dark-coloured sign is much more visible than low-contrast combinations like blue on green.
- Using contrasting colours for walls, floors, doorframes, handrails, and fixtures can help individuals distinguish between different spaces and areas. Clear colour differentiation between steps, ramps, and the surrounding ground can also prevent trips and falls.
- Public parks and pathways can use different colours and textures to create clear, visible routes. For example, a dark-coloured walking path bordered by lighter landscaping features can help distinguish walkways from green spaces.
3. Lighting and Glare Reduction
Lighting design is often overlooked but is essential for creating accessible spaces. Well-lit areas improve visibility for everyone, but for people with vision impairments, the placement and intensity of lighting can either enhance or detract from their experience in a space.- High-glare surfaces or overly bright lighting can create significant discomfort and make it harder for people with low vision to see. Diffused lighting or matte finishes on surfaces help minimise glare.
- Installing task lighting in areas such as reception desks, reading areas, and information kiosks can provide additional illumination where it’s most needed.
4. Auditory Cues
While vision is important, sound can be equally vital in helping people navigate spaces. Incorporating auditory cues adds another layer of accessibility, ensuring that people with vision impairments can orient themselves effectively.- Audible Signage and signals at pedestrian crossings or entranceways announce the direction or availability of specific services.
- Ambient soundscapes or strategically placed sound markers (like water features or specific auditory tones) can guide individuals toward key areas or exits, enhancing their overall spatial awareness.
- Public spaces like airports, shopping centres or train stations can implement auditory wayfinding systems that announce key locations, such as ticket counters, exits, or restrooms.
